My husband and I are both hard working and like to make life easier for each other. However, he grew up in a country where gender roles are very defined, so he never developed good cleaning habits. He is learning as we go along. I don't mind doing most of it, as long as I feel like we're doing it together - working as a team. He's wonderful with the childcare. He bathes, feeds and dresses our daughter every morning while I get ready for work.

I'm a stay at home mom and he's in the military, When he is home, we work together. I do all the house chores then cook and sometimes he cook and after dinner, he does the dishes, sweeps, and mops so that i can get my bath. Taking care of kids is a FULL TIME job and being in the military is stressful to but we work it out so that one person don't seem stressed!

Define slacker? My guy works extremely hard for the money to pay the mortgage and the bills. I take care of everything household related and do part of the gardening. He fixes things that break and does garage stuff. I chose to stay home, and take care of the kids, and now they are all independent my work is done, he is still working, so I got to take the early retirement.

Working together to get thorough daily chores is one of the best ways to stay connected after a day apart doing what it takes to pay the bills. Yes chores are easier done by one then the other but it should balance out. A couple is a team.

The ideal arrangement is to find one system and learn it for long enough to go from shu to ha in shuhari. http://homepage3.nifty.com/aikido_sakudo... Only then, after they have formed strong roots, do they branch out to do other things. This allows the fastest and most efficient way to "synthesize" and take ownership of martial information, no matter what style or type. Everything else is doable, but less efficient. http://dandjurdjevic.blogspot.com/2012/0... Both of those links are very good introduction pieces on the things people see when on a training journey. That's the ideal. But life often isn't about ideals but what is "feasible". Personally, I prefer people to get exposure to these things early on, irregardless of how fast they could be learning things. It's not like traditional martial arts are really all that concerned about "teaching people quickly". There are always other reasons to undertake martial arts training. That's a bit ironic if you know my history at YA:MA. I'm one of those that prefer to increase efficiency in learning and training with better training methods. At the same time, if your brother wants to learn Wing Chun and Taiji Chi Chuan together, I would say go for it. It's better than doing nothing on X/Y/Z days. While it doesn't necessarily take 10-20 years to reach the Ha stage of Shu Ha Ri, it's quite obvious when a student has progressed from the Shu stage of copying other people's movements and looks to the Ha or Ri stage. For any new student that is taking both WC and TCC, I would suggest that they get used to building two rooms in their minds: one named WC and the other TCC. When the TCC door is open, the WC door must always be closed. When the WC door is open, the TCC door must always be closed. And until a student progresses to the stage where they no longer need to move based upon a form someone else created for them and imposed on them from the outside, is the moment that they are ready to open both doors at once. Until then, having mental compartments makes learning smoother than might otherwise be the case. Less confusing perhaps. When you look at Masters or those with 30 some odd years of martial arts and life experience (notice I mentioned life, not high school experience), remember that they are not you. You are not the Ri or Mastery stage, thus what they can do or what arts they can learn, is not something a beginner can obtain. They can hope to emulate it and set it as their goal, but beginners are at a point in their lives that they are still at the mental and physical stage of utilizing forms. This is why you will often hear people here talk about how students that jump from one style after 6 months, 2-3 years, don't understand anything deep about martial arts. They spent most of that time learning forms. Then when they met a new style, they learned some more forms. And that's all they did. They never progressed further. I'm not saying you must devote X amount of time to one style to progress. I'm saying that this is reality and people who do things like that, suffer the consequences. So if people choose to do whatever in life they wish to, at the minimum they should understand and appreciate the consequences, one way or another.

Grandmaster Maasaki Hatsumi of Togakure Ryu is the master of nine separate and relatively unrelated ryus. I don't think your brother should be concerned about one affecting the other. If anything the skills would complement and enhance each other. As an analogy, that would be like telling a police officer that wielding a firearm will adversely affect their hand-to-hand combat skills or telling an engineer that having a hobby in origami will screw up his or her designs.
