Question: For example, I can glance at a paper with many dots on it and within seconds I can fairly accurately guess how many dots there are. I don't even have to think about it, the number just comes to me. Like, say someone drew 183 dots. I will guess within 3 of the number. This also applies to everything else you can count, though I haven't tried guessing with really large numbers yet. So is this unusual? Is there anything I can do to learn more about it and/or use it to my advantage? Are there others like me? And what could cause an ability like this? Good spatial sense?

In my opinion, at work you are restrained to think critically. Your hands are tied by what your boss wants and the way he or she wants your job done. Their way of doing things and what they expect from you may not fall in the guide lines of critical thinking. The company I work is a sub contractor for the US government and evaluating any kind of argument, or solving any problems outside the box will never happen. The plan and simple truth is the company I work for cares about only one thing, turning a profit. No need to think about it just do it. Thinking, skill and pride in ones work is out of the question and a thing of the past.

Perhaps Asperger's Syndrome. Have you seen "Rain Man" ? Raymond Babbit, had high functioning autism and could count anything very quickly. On the restaurant scene, a big amount of toothpicks fell on the floor, and Ray counted almost instantly. Go see a psychiatrist, do an IQ test. Maybe you're a genius.

Let's test it. Tell me how many x there are: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx... I'll check back in a few days to see if you've guessed. It's probably not a disorder. You're probably just really smart.

Yeah its Montage, its a technique Eisenstein pioneered. Eisenstein felt the "collision" of shots could be used to manipulate the emotions of the audience and create film metaphors. Look him up, and mention him in your essay. Especially if its a film studies essay but even if it isn't its good to have done research.
