How do you format a Seagate SATA hard drive purchased to go into an external drive case? Topic: External drive case sata
July 17, 2019 / By Keeley
Question: I purchased a Seagate 500 GB Serial ATA 7200/32MB/SATA-3G Hardrive and a external SATA hard drive housing to put it in. I have several of the older versions that I built that were as simple as plugging in the hard drive, the power and USB cable and you were off and running. I can't seem to make that happen with the new one. it's telling me I need to format the drive before I put the drive in the casing. How do I do that?! I've already done the obvious, ie. installing it in the external case and plugged it in. Windows goes through the motions of recognizing the drive and telling me it is ready to use but I can't locate the drive on Windows Explorer. I found a little blurb in the case instructions that says I need to format the drive. Short of trying to install the drive in my PC to format is there any other common practice to fix this?!!

See if it shows up in Disk Management Right-click Computer > Manage > Disk Management. Look under Disk drives or removable storage. It might even be under USB controllers. If that doesnt work try SeaTools for Windows. SeaTools for Windows is a comprehensive, easy-to-use diagnostic tool that helps you quickly determine the condition of the disc drive in your external hard drive, desktop or notebook computer. It includes several tests that will examine the physical media on your Seagate or Maxtor disc drive and any other non-Seagate disc drive. SeaTools for Windows tests USB, 1394, ATA (PATA/IDE), SATA and SCSI drives. It installs onto your system. SeaTools for Windows is completely data safe. http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/seatoolsforwindowssetup.exe

Anycontinual could desire to be broken in case you bump it too stressful whilst that's working. So in simple terms such as you will be careful shifting a computer around whilst that's working, you could no longer toss around an externalcontinual whilst that's plugged in. I even have had various stressful drives because of the fact that 1983 at artwork and homestead and in easy terms had a million unexpected failure. yet that became into an out of the container decrease back laptop bought for $a hundred which does no longer even boot till I taken care of out itscontinual cables. Thecontinual became into making unusual noises long formerly it failed, and it became right into a Win98continual on a computer that regularly booted Linux from yet anothercontinual, so no great loss, different than some interesting movies the former proprietor left on it.

There are different ways to format a hard drive. You could probably hook it up directly to your computer and format it, or just put it in the casing and format it from there.

Go to your control panel,AdministrativeTools, diskmagemt, and see if it is recognozided there, if it's then go to the format process from there.

This can be so many issues. The sata controller might be burnt out, the drive may not be getting power, psu problem, there might be an error on the HDD (rare), the PCI controller has issues, etc. It can also be as simple as a loose connection. There is hope that you can get back your files on the HDD if there is nothing wrong with the HDD. You can place the HDD into a external case and retrieve the files. As for your computer, you will need a tech to look into the issue (it might be time for an upgrade or a new computer).
