Sharp pain on left side of body, right below rib cage?

Sharp pain on left side of body, right below rib cage? Topic: Eating disorder thesis

Question: Around a year ago (I am currently 14) I was experiencing theses sharp pains which what at first seamed like was my heart. It would last for around 10 sec. where I could not move or even breath or else the pain would increase. Eventually, I found out that if I hit myself below the heart, the pain would go away (crazy, I know but it worked!). That occurred probably once every 3 weeks. About 5 hours ago, it happened again. This time, though, when I "hit" myself, it didn't go away. I tried everything I could think of (stretching, eating, etc.) but nothing would help. I am still experiencing that pain now. Its not as bad as it was before, but it still feels like a sharp pain, right below my heart. I also noticed that when I poked myself directly under the rib cage, the pain would increase. I don't know what is directly under my left rib cage that might be causing this. Can someone help me?!? Thanks, Joseph

That would most likely be your stomach. Contrary to popular belief, the stomach is not located behind the naval, but rather on the left side of the body, below the left lung and part of the heart (which is located more central in the chest cavity). Here are a few common stomach disorders/problems that fit your description. 1.Dyspepsia is the most common stomach disease which affects 40-60% of world's population at least once in a lifetime and is characterized by persistent or occasional pain in upper abdomen or in lower chest but can also result regurgitation (reflux of stomach content back into esophagus and mouth), bloating, nausea and vomiting. 4.Peptic ulcer is an sore in mucous membrane of the stomach although it develops more often in the duodenum. Peptic ulcer is more common in men and causes perpetual abdominal pain, burning ache, bloating and abdominal fullness, loss of appetite and unintentional weight loss. 6.Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach lining and most frequently results pain in the upper abdomen. If this just started today, rest the arm, keep pressure off (don't lean on) this elbow, use some ice on the elbow, take some anti-inflammatories if you can safely take them, see an orthopedist if you like, or await developments. It may improve in a few days or so. The reason your hand is going numb is that the ulnar nerve which passes through the elbow goes to the pinky side of your hand. It also transmits pain signals in the arm and hand. It is likely you are having an issue with your ulnar nerve in this arm, though you need a doctor to take your complete medical history and examine you and perhaps order EMG nerve conduction studies to verify that. If this has been going on for a few weeks or longer, you may be dealing with cubital tunnel syndrome which is a problem similar to carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrist, only cubital tunnel syndrome affects the ulnar nerve in the elbow. But cubital tunnel syndrome is not a one-day or even a few-days problem (though of course every cubital tunnel syndrome case starts out with a bad day); it's a chronic problem. So if this just started today, it may not be diagnosed as cubital tunnel syndrome yet, just an ulnar nerve impingement issue. If you do have cubital tunnel syndrome, it is treatable with anti-inflammatories, injections, an elbow brace sometimes only at night, light elbow exercise, nerve manipulation, and if necessary (usually isn't unless conservative treatment has been tried and failed or if EMG nerve conduction velocity studies tell the doctor that conservative treatment will fail), outpatient surgery. The first thing that comes to mind is pnumonia or pluresy. Pluresy is caused by the infection in the lung causes the outter tissue of the lung to dry up and rub against t he chest wall. The pain from this can be pretty awful and it can migrate. Have a chest xray to rule it out.

Wow - 3 whole years! I'm glad you're having the ultrasound done because that can help reveal what might be going on there. I used to have some pains like that and my doctor said he thought it was an ovary, but he didn't get more specific than that and didn't seem worried about it, even though I also told him it would sometimes move outward a bit so I could even see it bulging a little under my skin. Then in a few moments it would go back down. Odd, but it obviously wasn't a problem since for me getting pregnant was like falling off a log in the water. I think something is definitely going on since it's taking you so long to get pregnant. If you smoke, then stop, by the way. Good luck to you!
