Blackberry Storm battery life/charging issues.?
Topic: Fixing a case stylus
May 23, 2019 / By Scot Question:
I got the new Blackberry Storm for Christmas. I absolulty ADORE this touch screen blackberry. The sure press technology is amazing.
I only have 2 problems with this new phone:
Battery life: I am only averaging 7 to 8 hours out of one long charge with my blackberry. Because I am a busy on the go college student, I need more battery life. I read on the message boards that giving your phone several 17 hour long charges should boost the battery life, but that didnt help at all. I also set the screen brightness to 10% from 100% (I didnt notice the difference, honestly) and do NOT have bluetooth running at all.
Any other solutions?
When I plug my Blackberry in to charge with the charger that came with the PDA it does not charge. The phone does not show the lightening blot on the battery display showing that it is charging. I bought a charger from a different company and when I plug it in the battery will charge. Maybe there is something wrong with my charger? Also, when I unplug the phone from the charger in the mornings the screen is completly unresponsive. I have to remove the case, remove the back panel and then remove the battery. Then I have to put the phone back together and wait for it to reboot. I really dont want to do this every morning. My old HTC Mogul had a "Soft Reset" button on it that I could press with the Stylus and it would restart the phone. Does the blackberry have this? It cant be good for my phone to be constantly taking the battery in and out.
If I could fix these 2 problems with my phone, I would have no complaints or issues with it!
Thanks so much for your help!

Charging it too often when the power is high is not good for your battery life. Charge it only when the battery life is near done (like 5-10%) for better maintenance of battery life. However it's not good to let the battery completely die out either.

Most of the phone's you listed are great choices.Using a cellphones in Europe is different than any other place. When traveling, most cellphone carriers charge a great deal for international rates. And most european countries charge fee's for connection of cellphone calls. Below are a list of options and facts that are available for your review.
What you should know about GSM
Global System for Mobile Communications or GSM is cell phone network that is used in Europe and many countries throughout the world. In Europe, T-Mobile and AT&T use GSM networks. You will need a GSM network phone while traveling through Europe. It is wise to have a cell phone on you during your travels in case of emergencies. Cells phones that are operated in Europe are operated on GSM 900 or 1800. This is different from the U.S. which works on GSM 850 or 1900.
Have you ever heard of a SIM card? Well, when traveling to Europe, you will need a sim card in your phone in order for your phone to work. Sim Cards are a small micro chips that fit into your cell phone. This chip has your phone number and account info stored on it and goes directly into your phone. These cards do not cost much, around 15 euro in German and last for as long as you use it. These cards can be purchased in most countries in the world so you can have one for France, the U.S., and any other country you plan to travel. These cards can be purchased at any cell phone retailer location. On a final note, it is wise to purchase a SIM card from the country you plan to travel too. If you purchase, for instance, a cell phone from SIM card from France and plan to travel to Rome with that same SIM card in your phone, you will be charged a roaming fee which makes using your cell phone more expensive.
The best recommendation for cellphone use in Europe by far is pre-paid phones. These can be bought throughout Europe for as little as 20 Euro. This is a no contract deal that you pay as you go. Minute's are cheap running from 20 Euro for 15 mins to 120 minutes for 50 Euro. This is a cost effective means of saving money while enjoying the feeling of having minutes in case of emergencies.
Use Your Cellphone
Another thing you could do is use your own cellphone. You will need your cell phone unlocked. Most cell phone providers lock their cell phones . What does this mean to you? Well, you cannot change the SIM card that is stored in the phone. This is due in part because the cellphone companies do not want you to buy cellphone from them and get a SIM card from a different company. There are many ways to get your cell phone unlocked but keep in mind that policies differ for unlocking cell phones. One company may charge a little and most charge alot. There are ways to get your cell phone unlocked without having to deal with your cell phone provider. You could buy unlocked phones via the internet for fairly cheap or you could search for sites that offer instructions on how to unlock your cell phone. It is important to note that you need to make sure your phone is a quadband phone meaning it operates on all cell phone frequencies. This means no matter where you go in Europe your will have an connection. Most cell phone carriers offer plans in international destinations so it's wise to ask before doing this step.
I know this is alot of information but I hope this helps.
If your phone is unresponsive when you unplug it, the most likely cause is that the charger was not working and the battery completely died and drained your battery. When you plug it in, confirm that the device goes into 'clock' mode and displays an alarm clock. That is proof that the device is charging. My recommendation is once the clock comes up, click the Escape button or the End Call button to go back to your home screen. Otherwise, your device will display the clock all night while it is charging.
When you say your original charger is not working, if it is the USB charging cable, you will need to install the software on your PC before plugging in your device. If it is the wall charger that is not working, it is likely defective. I would bring it back to a Verizon store and they should replace it for free.
Not sure if I am allowed to post links. If not, do a google search for 'Blackberry Storm Soft reset'.
There is a 3rd party app that allows you to do a soft reset on the phone (replaces having to remove the battery), but if your device is not responsive, this wont really do you any good. I use it once in a while if my phone appears sluggish or I get the hour glass a lot. There are a lot of other good working apps for the storm linked here. Check it out.

8 hours constant use? How long would you expect a mobile phone battery to last after 8 hours constant use? Maybe if you used it a little less the battery would last a lot longer. And how can you use it for 8 hours constantly anyway? Don't you have anything else to do?

First check to make sure that you have ALL your applications closed on your Storm because the more you have open and running the more battery life you drain. Second make sure that you have the latest software uploaded on your phone, even though it just came out RIM launched new software that you can download to your handset directly from blackberry.com. As for your charger it sounds defective, take it to a Verizon store and have them exchange it for a new one!
