Why won't my cat eat dry food?

Why won't my cat eat dry food? Topic: Nutrition and health research articles

Question: I brought a new kitty home, she is about 4 years old, she was my grandmother's. She spent a lot of time alone upstairs in my grandma's home because the dogs ruled the rest of the house. She is pretty skinny for a house cat. It's been less than a week and she is getting better about behaving with my other two cats. I have yet to see her eat dry cat food, but she will eat the canned. She is using the litter box and drinking water, but still growls a little at the other two cats when they get too close. I have tried mixing the dry food with the canned food but she just licks the canned food off. She will also eat some human food. I don't want to keep feeding her canned food because someone puked up what looked like canned food in the living room :( but I don't want her to go hungry. How can I get her to eat dry food?

What did she get fed when she was living with your grandma? Cats are really picky about their food and don't handle sudden changes in diet well. If she was previously being fed a different dry food, get some of that, and slowly start mixing a little of the new stuff in over a span of a few weeks until she's changed over. If all she'll eat is canned and one of the other cats doesn't handle it well, you may need to feed her separately. It's a pain, but doable. Alternatively, have her teeth ever been cleaned? If her dental health is really bad (like if she's got a lot of plaque built up or cavities), she won't eat dry food because it hurts. Usually the vet will mention dental health at a regular checkup if it's an issue.

Dry food isn't good for cats. Its existence is entirely because it makes feeding more convenient for humans. If you're worried about leaving her alone for a week while you go on vacation, then why not get a pet sitter? Just let her eat what she prefers. Changes in diet can cause problems for humans, cats, dogs, everybody.

The only thing I would add to the previous answer is that canned food is MUCH better for cats than dry. If that's what she wants then that's what I would feed her.

Aspen Originally Answered: Which fast food is better? One that sells different combination of food VS. sells one special food?
In my opinion a place that specializes in one type of food tends to produce a much better product than one that tries to be "all things to all people". The best example of this would be In-N-Out Burgers. If you're not familiar with them, their menu consists of hamburgers/cheese-burgers/ fries / milk shakes / soda / coffee that's it. The don't even have chicken sandwiches. And they were recently named the number one fast food chain in a national survey (conducted by Consumer Reports Magazine). Not bad for a chain with locations in only four states. And when you look at a place like Jack In The Box, who's menu is all over the place, well their food is good but it's not great. Even the people who love their tacos use words like "weird mystery meat" to describe them. The business plan known as K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) works wonders in the restaurant industry.
