How do you clean luggage?

How do you clean luggage? Topic: Trolley case samsonite
June 17, 2019 / By Geraldine
Question: I bought a new piece of luggage a couple weeks ago. It is made of some sort of heavy canvas material, and it is bright pink. I flew somewhere and when I got to my destination it looked like my luggage had been dropped in a mud puddle and run over with one of those luggage trolleys. I tried scrubbing the black stains with a damp cloth and it did nothing. Any suggestions on how to clean my suitcase? There are no cleaning instructions on the tag that came with it. Thanks for any help.

Samsonite says: "Softside Care To clean softside luggage, we recommend spot cleaning with a mild soap (i.e. dish soap) and water. If this is not successful, try a product used for spot removal on clothing such as Spray 'n Wash, or using a foam type cleaner used to clean car mats or automobile carpets (sold at car parts stores). If the luggage has an offensive odor, use a vinegar (1 part) and water (5 parts) mixture. This may take the odor out but it will then need to be aired out for a few days. Also, we recommend placing charcoal in the bag for a day or more (depending on the strength of the odor) and close the bag. The charcoal will absorb the smell." Traverer's Choice says: "Canvas A stiff, cotton fabric, generally of a tight plain weave of two- to 14-ply yarns. Highly subject to mildew, canvas can be chemically treated to curb the effects of weather damage." "How do I care for my luggage? (they don't specifically address canvas, although these might work): Polyester Polyester is a durable and resilient fabric. It has excellent abrasion resistance. For best results, clean the surface with mild soap and water and a soft rag. Do not saturate the fabric. For best results, clean the entire panel, not just the soiled area. After your fabric has been cleaned, spray it with Scotchguard?to restore its water, dirt and stain-resistant properties. Do not use these cleaners on leather trim. Ballistic Nylon Ballistic nylon is treated with Teflon?to repel water, dirt and stains, which makes cleaning your luggage easy. Clean with mild soap and water and a nylon-bristled brush. Do not saturate the fabric. For best results, clean the entire panel, not just the soiled area. Foaming upholstery cleaners made for wool-nylon blend fabrics also work well. After your fabric has been cleaned, spray it with Scotchguard?to restore its water, dirt and stain-resistant properties. Do not use these cleaners on leather trim. Hardware Avoid oiling locks or hinges, since oil may leak in and stain case linings or clothing. If hardware should become scratched, rub lightly with fine steel wool and re-seal with lacquer or clear nail polish The cleaning products mentioned are available at leading grocery and chain stores nationwide. As always, when using any commercial cleaning product, follow the manufacturer's directions carefully. Sitagita says: "How to refurbish old luggage: Most bags, except leather, can be cleaned both inside and out by rubbing lightly with a cloth dipped in warm soapy solution. You don't have to get it soaking wet, but do let the solution sit on the bad stains that are likely to be in straps and handles. Air it in the sun for two days." Good luck!

Have a luggage tag of your own on each piece of luggage. Name/phone number only - no address [except maybe home city]. You should also have a piece of paper INSIDE the luggage [or in an outside zip pocket] with your name, cell phone number and your itinerary on it. If the tags come off, they can find your info inside the luggage and contact you. This is the best way to make sure luggage isn't lost - at least not due to anything on your part. Once you hand it over there are no guarantees!! Put a ribbon or something easily identifiable on each piece - you might even take a picture with your camera phone, just in case you have to identify it. I always put a matching ribbon on my carry-on, so I can show the agents at the "lost luggage" office what it looks like. That came in very handy once when my luggage didn't follow me on my connecting flight. NEVER put anything you can't afford to lose in your check luggage. Your carry-on should have everything you need for a day [including change of clothes, medications, etc.], just in case your checked luggage is delayed. When you check in, make sure they put the correct destination tag on your luggage, i.e. the tag with the airport code on it.

Lots of dry baking soda, scrub it with a brush. Or make a paste with baking soda (don't get the canvas too wet). Or try a cloth dipped in some laundry detergent, especially the kind that says it dissolves grease.

I had the same problem with a checked bag, and I tried wiping it clean; didn't wok! I purchased a can or foam carpet cleaner, and it worked! Good Luck!
