Most likely to be Love Song by Sarah Bareilles: Head under water And you tell me to breathe easy for a while breathing gets harder, even I know that You made room for me but it's too soon to see If I'm happy in your hands I'm unusually hard to hold on to Blank stares at blank pages No easy way to say this You mean well, but you make this hard on me I'm not gonna write you a love song 'cause you asked for it 'cause you need one, you see I'm not gonna write you a love song 'cause you tell me it Makes a break in this If you're on your way I'm not gonna write you to stay If all you have is leaving I'm gonna need a better Reason to write you a love song today I learned the hard way That they all say things you want to hear And my heavy heart sinks deep down under you and Your twisted words, Your help just hurts You are not what I thought you were Hello to high and dry Convinced me to please you Made me think that I need this too I'm trying to let you hear me as I am I'm not gonna write you a love song 'cause you asked for it 'cause you need one, you see I'm not gonna write you a love song 'cause you tell me it's Make or breaking this If you're on your way I'm not gonna write you to stay If all you have is leaving I'm gonna need a better Reason to write you a love song today If it is you have AMAZING taste - this song was a smash hit in 2007 and i LOVED it =D If not you could be thinking of Love Story by Taylor Swift !! Could it be Jack Ingram.."I'll Catch You When You Fall'? It seems like years and a million tears Since you've left the old hometown. Now you've changed they say and the great white way Is your new stomping ground. Well, it's plain to see you've forgotten me 'Cause you never write or call. But I'll be around when they let you down And I'll catch you when you fall. Chorus Well I'll catch you when you fall There's no one else but you. Now, you're riding high but honey by and by You're gonna cry for love that's true. And when you're uptown baby Starts giving you the stall. Well I'll be around when they let you down And I'll catch you when you fall. Well, theyve turned your head, cause I've heard it said You're ashamed of us back home. But I'll bet the sound of a southern bound Still chills you to the bone. With your haughty pose and your uptown clothes You arent fooling me at all. When you're feeling bad this ol' country lad Is gonna catch you you fall. (Repeat Chorus) (Repeat Chorus) Well I'll be around when they let you down And I'll catch you when you fall.

I would strongly suggest covers.. but not just "covers." Make them your own, change them up as much as possible and pick ones that are not often covered. Through exploring other peoples music and getting it in your bones, you will eventually start to understand what you need to do to write a song. It's a right of passage all young bands and songwriters must go through.

Savannah Originally Answered: Good topics to write a song about? a rock song?
The best rock songs are the ones that are real. Something that has happened to you and has had an impact on your life. It also has to be easy for other people to relate to. Anger, Jealousy, Sadness, Joy, everyone has felt those emotions which makes it easy to relate to. Give it a try and see how it turns out.

Issues like the war, the unjustice or the poverty. The rock has always distinguished from other musical genders because many of the songs or the bands talk about higher topics than just love or sex. Think in songs like "If everyone cared" from Nickelback or "We're not gonna take it" from Twisted Sister. Check these links.
